It’s incomprehensible to me that I was born into a country where the color of one’s skin once determined where he or she could sit in a restaurant or on the bus. Old news footage of riots in the streets and, most chilling to me, a photo of a man hanged because of his race, all depict events that seem so long ago, yet they weren’t.
