A sociopath is unable to love anyone. Signs you may recognize in a sociopath are lying, lawbreaking, impulsive acts, and tempting to control others with threats and aggression. They use empathy to drive their seemingly irrational and illegal acts. In the news, we are witnessing an increase in politicians who create autocracies to fuel their own greedy self-fulfilling agendas.
The names of many world leaders come to mind like, Putin, Netanyahu, Trump, and the list goes on, complemented by the usual suspected white-collar criminal sociopaths like Madoff, Bankman-Fried and Epstein. On average, 75% of sociopaths are men. All sociopaths share the same characteristics and many use empathy to divide and conquer and are more dictator than leader.
On a social level, a sociopath next door avoids paying bills, uses people as pawns for his/her own benefit, and inflates his/her value. As global leaders, they remind the world how poorly they have been treated and that their citizens are victimized so they can promote violence on their behalf when things do not go their way. This was clear in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine after resulting sanctions from NATO.
When the US began to criticize Netanyahu’s supreme court decision, he also employed empathy to gain back the US support. During the first part of the Hamas attack, news reports suggested Netanyahu withheld his army at the Gaza border. For 6-18 hours, no one came to defend the Israelis. When Netanyahu had enough vivid pictures of slaughtered Israelis to show the world the violence that was perpetrated against his people, he then responded with lethal force.
News channels suggested Netanyahu used the Israeli victims to garner enough powerful empathy from the world and the media to justify in his unbalanced obliteration of Gaza. He now has U.S. political and military support to build more Israeli settlements in Gaza without the interference of the Palestinian people. Israel calling UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres resignation for anti-Semitic remarks is a typical overreaction and a poor pitiful us stance but unfortunately, it works.
As a therapist and a human, my heart bleeds for all of those caught up in a sociopath’s wrath, who use people as pawns. Evil may win because sociopaths break the rules and have had a lifetime to learn how to use others to satisfy their own interests. Normal people cannot compete with that kind of experience. They also have conscience, soul, and spirit, which typically results in giving up the fight because they cannot hurt others. However, it seems the world is starting to understand sociopathy and growing tired of the manipulation.
Because sociopaths have a smaller amygdala, they have less fear and great confidence in taking whatever they want in any way they can. Their egos have fully taken over, which leaves no room for spirit and soul to exist. Even more tragic, there is no room for love either. What is left are parasitic thoughts to conquer whatever or whomever they want. Until they are stopped, they take as much as possible because there is never enough to satisfy a sociopath.
As Gaza death toll tops 10,000, Israel embarks on a needless ground offensive. The only way to stop a sociopath is to expose them for who they are because, sociopaths hate to be exposed. Netanyahu worked with Hamas before the attack and when negotiations broke down, he still let innocent Jews be killed. For him, empathy was his ticket back to gain US support for political control no matter how many are killed.
